Medicare in Michigan

Medicare in Michigan is a long term care plan sanctioned by the US government and administered by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Michigan Medicare is a medical health insurance program designed for the people of age 65 and above.  It is also available for disabled people. Originally started as a law, Michigan Medicare program has evolved into a long term care insurance policy which is benefitting more than 15% of the Michigan population.

Citizens interested in Michigan Medicare program needs to fulfill certain criteria.

  1. They must have a permanent legal residence in the US for five or more continuous years and they must be at least 65 years old.
  2. If they are under the age of 65 or disabled and are already eligible for one of the many social security plans, they can still opt for Michigan Medicare program.

The Medicare health insurance program provides a number of plans. It includes hospital insurance (plan A) and medical insurance (Plan B). Plan C combines these two and is known as Medicare advantage plans or Plan C. Medicare Part D covers a variety of prescription drug plans.

The Michigan Medicare program continues due to the compulsory Medicare tax payment by the US citizens. This long term care program makes contracts with several regional companies which are tasked with processing of more than one billion claims per year. There have been some instances of Medicare fraud and Government Accountability Officers categorize the Medicare program as ‘high-risk’.

In a recent study, some interesting facts about the Michigan Medicare program have come to surface. The total number of Medicare beneficiaries is approx. 1,571,709 which amount to almost 15% of the total population. Around 17% of these beneficiaries are disabled people, while around 53% people fall into the age group of 65-74.
